In 1906 Ray was elected as Educational Secretary of the Foreign Mission Board of Richmond, Virginia. He was very active in the Southern Baptist Convention and the Tennessee Baptist Convention. After graduation, Ray accepted the pastorate of the Immanuel Baptist Church of Nashville, Tennessee. When Ray graduated from Georgetown College in 1895, he entered Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, from which he graduated in 1898.
Two years later he was ordained and became pastor of Clear Creek Baptist Church in Kentucky.
